Disposal of ICT Hardware

The WEEE site in Sittingbourne (Swale) is now operational. You can find more details here http://www.swale.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=1025

Don't forget to erase or smash hard drives if sensitive data has been stored on the computer. For Office/admin computers, we suggest you engage EIS to clear the memory for you.

You need to be aware that schools are not able to take quantities of computers to the WEEE site in Sittingbourne. In law it remains the responsibility of the manufacturer to dispose of their equipment at the end of its life. The drop in 'tip' is only available to people using non-commercial vehicles (householders). Schools need to engage either the company that supplied the hardware for disposal, or pay a specialist contractor. Don't ever hand to a general disposal firm as these frequently end up being fly-tipped, and its very easy for them to be traced back to the school, who will then be held responsible.

An alternative is to consider whether there are any WEEE disposal schemes available through KCC. EIS or KCS may be able to assist in this.

Under no circumstances should kit be sold without the drives and Internet caches etc being professionally wiped or as stated in the case of MIS / SIMS hard drives, destroyed.

A colleague from Kent County Supplies passed me this this helpful information.

The link below is to a spreadsheet (available on Clusterweb), and lists those companies able to assist with recycling:

http://www.clusterweb.org.uk/UserFiles/CW/File/Suppliers/Client_Services/Links/Book_Recycle_Website_Info_1007.xls

This is an explanation of WEEE for schools etc and the implications of the regulations:

http://www.clusterweb.org.uk/communication/comms_docs/weee_implicationsforschools.doc

KCS is not responsible for WEEE, but MDJ Light Brothers and others can assist for a chargeable cost.

In addition to the above, if a school or customer of KCS has a photocopier and wishes to dispose of it or recycle it-please call KCS in the first instance as it will likely be rented through our contract and needs to be ultimately returned to the supplier it came from.

There are times when you can dispose of WEEE free of charge, specifically if it was sold to you after 13 August 2005, or you are replacing it with new equivalent EEE. In these circumstances, the compliance scheme of the relevant equipment producer or manufacturer is responsible for the WEEE. Your new EEE supplier can give you information on the options available.
