Training Opportunities in science

We hope you all had a good break and that the results that have emerged over the summer have at least some crumbs of comfort for you and your teams. Hopefully they were pleasing This e-mail is a reminder of the forthcoming training on offer from our team. These are all fully funded and some funds have come into your schools for cover needed to attend the Subject Leader days. This was sent to schools in the standards funds allocated from Kent.

The first course we are offering is for NQT’s. These will be detailed on fliers currently in school but further details can be asked for from the contact at the bottom of this e-mail. It starts on Weds 19th September at the Weald of Kent Conference Centre (Near Headcorn – Leeds exit on the M20). There are 10 ½ day sessions (from 1.30 pm),  delegates can attend all or some of the sessions offered. We will be covering such topics as Effective lessons, Behaviour management, creativity in science, teaching each of the strategy’s 5 key ideas (Forces, Cells, etc etc). Last year some attended all of the sessions whilst others dipped in and out as appropriate. IN EITHER EVENT- PLEASE BOOK ON TO THE COURSE IMMEDIATELY SO WE KNOW NUMBERS AND VIABILITY.

On 28th September we are running training on using the SEP Learning Skills for Science materials. This course has already proved popular and spaces are now limited. If you wish to attend please sign up now. This is a 2 day course where the materials and pedagogy will be explained on the first day and discussed and developed on the second day. This will be held in WYE (near Ashford) but the course is being repeated at two other venues later in the year.

On 4th October we will be organising twilight meetings for each of the different specifications at KS4 (hopefully in a school quite near to you). These will be run by one of the Kent team, school or centrally based AST’s or Specialist Schools. The idea is to help prevent you re-inventing the wheels and discuss problems / issues and share resources. You will be contacted by one of those organising the sessions very soon and you should confirm attendance with them. We hope that you will want to attend and bring ideas and resources that you can share.

On the 2nd. October we have earmarked a twilight session for each of the L6+ project schools (they know who they are!). This will be an opportunity to share early thoughts on the project and try to get schools discussing ways forward. We will let schools know the venue for these and they will be organised by one of the consultant team.

On October 8th we are re-running our successful "Assessment in Science" couirse which looks at a variety of assessment needs in science including assessment for learning and the requirements of the new specifications.

On October 11th & 12th we are running a single day session (repeated) to support KS4 Additional science. As I write this is being developed and we will e-mail shortly the finalised list of sessions.

During the w/b 15.10.07 are the subject leader days. These are held in Canterbury, Maidstone and Gravesend on 16, 17 and 18th respectively. Sign up using forms on fliers or contact our PA (details below). We will be looking at supporting behaviour management, using question level analysis to help identify misconceptions, developing pedagogy at KS4, sharing good practice (please forward ideas you may wish to share) and some short update information.

We hope you or someone else from your department will be able to attend some or all of these courses. The subject leader courses can be attended by those aspiring to leadership or yourselves.

Regards,

The Science Team
