Hi We have a conference on "Secret Codes" planned for 15 Jan and Feb 9, with the two VCs starting at 10.30, and lasting for between 1 and 1 1/4 hours. At the moment, I have advertised it for 11-13 year-olds, but the school which has signed up to participate are going to involve their Y6 children, and so I'm now opening it up to Y6 as well as Y7. For more details, see http://motivate.maths.org/content/enigma This is an exciting topic, which gives children an insight into a real-world application of maths. It will be led by James Grime, who now leads the Enigma Project. If you can't get James to come to your school to lead a day, then this is an alternative. As well as talking about codes, and leading the children in a variety of short activities during the first VC, he will also demonstrate a real WWII enigma machine. There will be follow-up activities on our website for the children to do. The second VC will be for them to give a short presentation on what they have done, hear what others have done, and to discuss their work with other schools. James will also engage them in discussion of their work. To book a place, please use the Schools Registration Form at http://motivate.maths.org/content/bookvc if you haven't registered with us since September, and then use the booking form http://motivate.maths.org/content/node/116, Booking a scheduled conference, to book a place. Regards Jenny--Dr Jenny GageCoordinator, Motivate Project             Centre for Mathematical SciencesMillennium Mathematics Project                            Wilberforce RoadUniversity of Cambridge                                          Cambridge44(0)1223 764278                                                   CB3 0WAFax: 44(0)1223 765900                                           http://www.motivate.maths.org

Hello, The Natural History Museum have asked me to help them to find schools in the South East who may be able to take part in an evaluation of their online materials, and visit the new Darwin Centre Cocoon in Spring 2010. They looking for schools with VC to help evaluate the ‘Day in the Life of a Scientist’ online resources:  http://www.nhm.ac.uk/education/online-resources/a-day-in-the-life/index.htmlThe NHM need schools, ideally in the South East, with pupils in Key Stages 3, 4 or 5.·         They would like to visit the schools in person to observe pre-visit teaching.·         They would observe the school during the Darwin Centre Cocoon visit.·         They would like to observe the post-visit presentations via VC and ask pupils their opinions. The NHM want this to be a mutually beneficial process and will aim to support the volunteering teachers through this process. Do you have any schools who might be interested in taking part in the NHM evaluations and in visiting the New Darwin Centre in Spring 2010? Unfortunately, the NHM cannot fund the visits but, as I’m sure you are aware, the Museum has free entry. If you think you can help to find schools for this project then please get in touch with Grace Kimble, Schools Programme Developer at the NHM, g.kimble@nhm.ac.uk, 020 7942 6006. Please keep me copied on any replies. Thanks, Tim. ________________________Tim BoundyNational Education Network Services GroupContent Coordinatort: 01235 822370m: 07787 574036VC via JVCS: lumen-house-membury-room@ja.net Twitter: http://twitter.com/TimBoundy

Hi This term has been a busy one, with quite a number of you involved in our VCs - thanks for continuing to support us! Next term we have the following events for secondary students: * "Secret Codes and the Enigma Machine", for 11-13 year-old students, with James Grime of the Enigma Project. James will have a genuine WWII Enigma machine with him to demonstrate. There will also be plenty of secret codes to decipher, and lots to find out about the history of codes. This conference would be good for a linked Maths-History or Maths-English or Maths-Languages project for Y7 or Y8. VCs are on 15 Jan and 9 Feb, both starting at 10.30am and lasting for about 1 to 1 1/4 hours in both cases. For more information and links to the schools registration and booking forms, go to https://motivate.maths.org/content/enigma. The cost is £195 for up to 40 students, more pro rata. * "Motivate goes to the Imperial War Museum Duxford: Maths and Flight", for13-15 year-old students. The first VC will be an opportunity to see inside the big hangar at the IWM Duxford and to hear about the planes and the maths which evolved to make them possible. We'll also think about the logistics of getting all the planes into the hangar - not a trivial task! VCs are on 11 Feb and 23 Mar, both starting at 10.30am and lasting for about 1 1/4 hours in both cases. For more information and links to the schools registration and booking forms, go to http://motivate.maths.org/content/flight. The cost is £195 for up to 40 students, more pro rata. * "Fibonacci Numbers", for 12-14 year-old students. This is a single 2 hour session, on 9 Feb, 13.00-15.00. The cost is £85 for up to 40 students, more pro rata. See http://motivate.maths.org/content/FibNos for further details, including links to the schools registration and booking forms. * "Tiling Patterns", for 13-15 year-old students. This is a single 2 hour session, on 4 Mar, 10.30-12.30. The cost is £85 for up to 40 students, more pro rata. See http://motivate.maths.org/content/tiling for further details, including links to the schools registration and booking forms. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas, and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in one or more of our VCs next term. Regards Jenny--Dr Jenny GageCoordinator, Motivate Project             Centre for Mathematical SciencesMillennium Mathematics Project                            Wilberforce RoadUniversity of Cambridge                                          Cambridge44(0)1223 764278                                                   CB3 0WAFax: 44(0)1223 765900                                           http://www.motivate.maths.org
