Hi We have a conference on "Secret Codes" planned for 15 Jan and Feb 9, with the two VCs starting at 10.30, and lasting for between 1 and 1 1/4 hours. At the moment, I have advertised it for 11-13 year-olds, but the school which has signed up to participate are going to involve their Y6 children, and so I'm now opening it up to Y6 as well as Y7. For more details, see http://motivate.maths.org/content/enigma This is an exciting topic, which gives children an insight into a real-world application of maths. It will be led by James Grime, who now leads the Enigma Project. If you can't get James to come to your school to lead a day, then this is an alternative. As well as talking about codes, and leading the children in a variety of short activities during the first VC, he will also demonstrate a real WWII enigma machine. There will be follow-up activities on our website for the children to do. The second VC will be for them to give a short presentation on what they have done, hear what others have done, and to discuss their work with other schools. James will also engage them in discussion of their work. To book a place, please use the Schools Registration Form at http://motivate.maths.org/content/bookvc if you haven't registered with us since September, and then use the booking form http://motivate.maths.org/content/node/116, Booking a scheduled conference, to book a place. Regards Jenny--Dr Jenny GageCoordinator, Motivate Project             Centre for Mathematical SciencesMillennium Mathematics Project                            Wilberforce RoadUniversity of Cambridge                                          Cambridge44(0)1223 764278                                                   CB3 0WAFax: 44(0)1223 765900                                           http://www.motivate.maths.org
